  • February 21 – Frederick Delius's opera A Village Romeo and Juliet is premiered in Berlin.
  • February 22 – Thomas Beecham conducts Delius's new opera at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.
  • May 27 – Bach House (Eisenach) opens in what is at this time believed to be the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach, the first museum devoted to a single composer.
  • General Porfirio Díaz orders a mariachi band to wear upper-class clothing (a charro suit) when they play for the visiting United States Secretary of State Elihu Root; this is the beginning of modern mariachi, as well as the traditional dress of future mariachi stars.
  • Publication of Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music by Ferruccio Busoni.
  • Cosima Wagner steps down from her position as head of the Bayreuth Festival. She is succeeded by her son Siegfried.
