Ceremony information

Nominees for the 22nd instalment of Star Awards were announced on 1 February 2016. First-time nominees included Bonnie Loo, Edwin Goh, Ian Fang, Romeo Tan, Sheila Sim and Ya Hui. The online Favourite award categories were held for the final time, with Jeanette Aw nominated again for Favourite Female Character and Favourite Onscreen Couple (Drama). She won six voting-based awards in Show 1 last year, including three Most Popular Regional Artiste Awards, Social Media Award and Favourite Female Character award for her role in The Journey: Tumultuous Times. Aw expressed a wish to be removed from the voting, but she was not removed from the voting list. Mediacorp says that as these awards are determined by online voting, so she still had to participate.

There was a change in lineup of the awards streamlined to 19 categories. Noting that hosts usually present both the variety and info-ed programmes and their similar presentation styles, and that the Best Variety Show Host and Best Info-Ed Programme Host awards have similar requirements, Mediacorp decided to merge both awards into a new category named 'Best Programme Host'. There is also a new category for drama series veterans called the 'Best Evergreen Artiste', and technical awards were done in an off-site presentation ceremony for the first time since 2009.

The names of the Top 20 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes contenders were revealed on 3 March 2016. With the induction of Qi Yuwu and Rui En into the All-Time Favourite Artiste Hall-of-Fame, as well as the exit of Dasmond Koh, Desmond Tan, Ian Fang, Lin Pei Fen, Lin Meijiao, Marcus Chin, Priscelia Chan, Terence Cao and Tracy Lee, there were 11 new or returning faces in total. Aloysius Pang, Chua En Lai, Jeffrey Xu and Sheila Sim were nominated for the first time, while Aileen Tan, Chen Tianwen, Jesseca Liu, Pan Lingling, Kate Pang, Zhang Yaodong and Zhang Zhenhuan returned to the list after their absence last year or earlier. In particular, Chen of the "Unbelievable" fame was last nominated for the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste award in 2002, the longest absence by any returning artiste so far. Liu, who last won the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste award in 2010 and left to join HIM International Music after her contract with Mediacorp expired, recently signed a new acting contract with Mediacorp last year, making her eligible to qualify for the award. The telepoll lines were announced later at a press conference at Mandarin Orchard Singapore, and voting for the Top 10 awards opened the following day at 12 noon. The lineup of the awards was also revealed, with Part 1 consisting of mostly variety/info-ed award categories, Part 2 with mostly drama award categories and the Post-show Party having online voting award categories.

The nominees for the Toggle Most Beloved Celebrity BFF Award category was the last to be revealed.

Julie Tan walked home with three awards: Rocket Award, Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes and Best Supporting Actress. Ge Tai Challenge and The Dream Makers II were the biggest winners of the ceremony, with the latter sweeping every drama award in Part 2 (apart from Favourite Male Character, which it was not nominated; and Top Rated Drama Serial). Unexpectedly, Paige Chua, Pornsak, Romeo Tan and Shaun Chen were left out in the Top 10 awards. In their places were first-time winners Jayley Woo, Aloysius Pang and Jeffrey Xu; as well as Jesseca Liu, Dennis Chew, Zhang Yaodong, Zhang Zhenhuan and Zheng Geping, who neither were nominated nor won last year. Joanne Peh, Quan Yi Fong and Elvin Ng graduate to All-Time Favourite Artistes next year, while Best Actress winner Jeanette Aw went on to win Favourite Female Character and Favourite Onscreen Couple (Drama) with Qi Yuwu for The Dream Makers II, debunking the myth of which no one could win Best Actress and Favourite Female Character simultaneously for the same role.

Awards categories

  • Bioskin Flawless Skin Award will also be first given out this year.
  • This is the first known year where the representative titles for Best Theme Song and Best Drama Serial are the same.
  • Other trivia

  • Part 1, Part 2 and Post-Show Party are the second, third and fourth 'live' variety specials in Mandarin respectively to be held at the Theatre@Mediacorp, after Lions Charity Show 2016.
  • Controversy

  • Professional and programme awards will only be given out when there are at least 10 candidates from 2014 onwards. Even though Channel 8 News & Current Affairs already had at least ten news presenters by the end of 2015, the Best News Presenter award, which was suspended along with the Best Current Affairs Presenter award, unfortunately did not return for the third consecutive time.
