Khamgaon is a city in Buldhana District, Maharashtra, India. Khamgaon is the largest city in the Buldhana district with most of the government offices in the district, and there have been demands to create a separate Khamgaon district from the Buldana district. The proposed Khamgaon District would comprise Khamgaon, Shegaon, Sangrampur (Sonala), Jagaon (Jamod), Malkapur, Nandura and Motala tehsils.

Khamgaon is also known as Silver City due to its silver works. However it was also known as Cotton City when it was a major trade center for cotton during the British Raj.

History

It was the major cotton hub during the British colonialist era. The city has many old buildings from that time. Sant Gajanan Maharaj Shegaon, a holy place for the Hindus, is located about 17 km from Khamgaon, northeasterly.

Dharma Baskar Sant Pachalegaonkar Maharaj Math is situated in Khamgaon. Nirgun Paduka of Dattatreya believed to have been given to Pachalegaonkar Maharaj are worshipped there by devotees.

Pandurang Pundalik Fundkar, a Cabinet Minister in Devendra Fadnavis' government is from Khamgaon.

Transport

Khamgaon is well connected by the NH 6 and Central Railway Mumbai-Kolkata railway line. The city is served by the Khamgaon railway station, which was built during the British Raj. Khamgaon is located just near Shegaon (17  km from Khamgaon). Also, Khamgaon Jalna railway line has been sanctioned by railway minister in 2016.

Khamgaon is easily accessible through rails and roads. Daily travels facility is from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, jalgaon, Dhule, Amravati, Surat, Ahmadabad, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Khamgaon had a population of 88,687. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Khamgaon has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 71%. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Marathi is the main language spoken here with hint of varhadi dialect.
