The DRDO Glide Bomb is the product of Defence Research and Development Organisation to deploy a standardized medium range precision guided weapon, especially for engagement of defended targets from outside the range of standard anti-aircraft defenses, thereby increasing aircraft survivability and minimizing friendly losses. Eminent Missile Scientist, Dr G. Satheesh Reddy was the Project Director of the Guided Bomb. As Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI) he led the development of complete Avionics package and state of the art sub systems.

Development

The Bomb was designed by the nodal Laboratory Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad, Defence Research and Development Organisation with the help of Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) in Bengaluru, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, Armaments Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune. The designing team design the bomb specially for Indian Air Force to fill their recruitment of precision guided weapons.

Variants

There are two variants of the DRDO Glide Bomb:

  • Garuthmaa - The winged version. It has a range up to 100 km.
  • Garudaa - The non-winged version. It has a range of 30 km and in future the range will be enhanced to 100 km. It has onboard navigation and guidance systems.
