In the 2017 Assembly elections, the SP-Congress Alliance headed by Yadav won 55 seats and was defeated by the BJP. He submitted his resignation to Governor Ram Naik on 11 March.

    Family feud

Since Yadav became chief minister, the family was divided into two feuding groups, one siding with him and the other with his father. Yadav had the support of his father's cousin, Ram Gopal. His father was supported by Shivpal (Mulayam Singh's brother) and friend Amar Singh.

On 30 December 2016, Akhilesh was fired from the party by his father one day after he released a separate list of candidates for the upcoming elections. He was readmitted to the party within a day. The following day he was elected as its national head by the party's national convention in Lucknow. This meant he replaced his father, who said the appointment was illegal. The matter appeared to be settled on 18 January when Mulayam recognised the decision of the Election Commission of India to accept Akhilesh as party president.
