The Thane Municipal Corporation Transport Service, operating under the name Thane Municipal Transport (T.M.T) is the transport wing of Thane Municipal Corporation, which operates a large number of bus lines in the Thane metropolitan area. These buses are called Thane Municipal Transport or T.M.T bus. TMT bus serves the entire Thane City. It also has operation outside city limits into neighbouring Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan Dombivali and Mira-Bhayandar.

Origins
Thane Municipal Corporation started its own transport service on 9 February 1989, known as TMT. TMT is the major bus service provider in Thane. TMT has all its bus depots in Thane and numerous bus stops. The biggest depot is at Wagle Estate.TMT plys its buses inside Thane city and also towards Kalwa & Mumbra. TMT bus ply from Thane to BHIWANDI, Mira Road, Mulund, Borivali, Andheri, BKC and Dombivali.
Formation of TMT Undertaking
Thane Municipal Corporation started its own transport service on 9 February 1989, known as TMT ~ Thane Municipal Transport. As Thane was growing fast both in the way of the economy as well as its population, as Thane was ignored by BEST in the early days.
Operations
The TMT uses CNG & diesel powered buses for its operation. Majority of the TMT display boards will only have destination name written in Marathi. A few newer buses with electronic display board are introduced in the fleet, which have destination with the route number flashing in Marathi as well as English on front & back of the buses.
The TMT bus routes are spread city wides and also to neighbouring cities. The TMT operates inter-city services to four different areas beyond the municipal limits of Thane city, i.e. into the limits of the bordering corporations of Mumbai, BHIWANDI, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli and Mira-Bhayandar. The TMT supplements suburban rails, which is the mass carrier on Thane city region. The internal places of Thane city which are far from the Thane Rly Stn are connected by TMT.
Thane City
The local bus service of the city, which are operated by TMC. The internal places of Thane city which are far from the Thane Rly Stn are connected by TMT. The major concentration has always been Thane city & with vast growing population in the city. The normal routes as well as inter city routes provide the services to the commuters.
Thane Suburbs
It is not official, but some faraway places from the Thane Rly Stn are known as its suburbs, like the Ghodbunder Road, Kolshet, Balkum, etc. which are beyond the Agra road. TMT services are not so frequent as in the city but it services the area along with other public transport undertaking.
Kalwa - Mumbra
Next station from Thane in Central Railways, the areas are covered by the TMT services, it has its oldest depot at Kalwa.
Mira - Bhayander
The area of Mira Road was connected to the Thane by the TMT. From various places of Thane it starts its services towards Mira Road Rly Stn (E). The inter city connection between the Thane city (which is on the central side) & Mira - Bhayandar (which on the western side).
Navi Mumbai
The city of Navi Mumbai is connected by the TMT, it recently started a bus service from Thane (Cidco) to Dombivli via Airoli, Rabale, Millennium Business Park and Mahape. In future it plans to start its services to Vashi & CBD Belapur.
Mumbai Suburbs
Predominately the BEST is the largest public transport provider in the Mumbai city & suburbs. TMT connects the last station in Mumbai suburb Mulund to the various parts of the Thane city. TMT's Air-conditioned buses connect Borivali (the western Suburb) with Thane via Ghodhbunder Road and from Kasarwadavli to Andheri via LBS Road and from Patlipada to BKC via Eastern Express Highway. TMT has plans to extend the services to area like Bhandup, Vikhroli towards south & also in western side of the Mumbai.
Kalyan - Dombivli
The cities of Kalyan - Dombivli are connected by the TMT, from Thane to Dombivli by the undertaking. TMT is planning to extend its services Kalyan - Dombivli cities.Fare
The TMT have several different options to pay the fares for the bus. The fares vary depending on the type. Paper tickets are valid only for single journey. CommuterS also have the option to buy monthly and quarterly passes. Student gets discounts on monthly and quarterly passes and senior citizen get discount for weekly, fortnightly, monthly and quarterly passes.
Single journey fares are valid only for single trip between any two points. They are issued on paper ticket by the bus conductor. All fare payments must be made in cash. The fare depends on distance of the destination. Single journey fare are not valid for transfers.
All fares are in Indian Rupees.

The TMT uses CNG & powered diesel buses. All buses are tagged with a route number and its corresponding destination. They are displayed in the front (in Marathi).

Majority of TMT buses consist of ordinary route. The few limited halt routes that were started in 1999-2000 were phased out and converted to ordinary routes.
For the very first time, 10 new air conditioned (AC) buses of the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) are added to the fleet. The service commence from Thane Rly Stn (E) - Kopri to Borivali Rly Stn (E) via Ghodbunder Road. In October 2014 TMT added 30 more Volvo (AC) buses and started two new AC routes: AC125. Kasarwadavli to Andheri (E) and AC126. Patlipada to BKC via. Eastern Express Highway.

Improvements & future plans
Under "Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM)" TMT received 200 new buses in the existing fleet of buses. TMT has started air-conditioned buses from Thane-Borivali and is now planning to start more buses towards Mumbai and other longer destinations. 15 new low floor buses with electronic display are on road from this April 2010. .
With introduction of new buses to its fleets which have been received under JNNURM scheme, TMT proposes to improve its services inside Thane city and also to extend their services to various outer city limits, some routes outside the city limits are Mira Road, Borivali, Vashi, CBD Belapur, Sion, Andheri, BKC. TMT also received 10 new air-conditioned Tata Marcopolo Buses which plies on Thane-Borivali route that is route no. AC-65 parallel to the BEST bus (AS 700).
The proposal for procuring 230 new buses under the JNNURM scheme was cleared in May, 2014.
