Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (Chinese: 如懿傳) is an upcoming Chinese television drama based on the novel of the same name by Liu Lianzi. It is about the marriage of Qianlong Emperor and Ulanara, the Step Empress during the Qing dynasty, starring Zhou Xun and Wallace Huo. The series is based on novel Hou Gong Ru Yi Zhuan by Liu Lianzi, and is the sequel to the award-winning drama Empresses in the Palace. It is set to air on Zhejiang Television ,Anhui Television、Shenzhen Television and Dragon Television and will premiere in late 2017.

Plot

With the Ulanara clan in disgrace after Empress Yixiu falls out of favour, Ruyi (Zhou Xun) learns the politics of the harem and steadily climbs up the ranks to become Empress. Even after surviving through multiple conspiracies and successfully proving her innocence, her relationship with Qianlong (Wallace Huo) had become irreparable. Ruyi eventually becomes disillusioned with her husband and the harsh reality of life in the Palace. Although the love and trust between them gradually disappeared, but Ulanara serves as a marvelous and distinguished empress until her death.
Development

Wu Xuelan (吴雪岚), also known as Liulianzi (流潋紫), started to write the original novel in 2011, and changed her work several times to achieve the best version in the next five years.

New Classics Media picked up the series for a 90-episode season, each episode cost approximately ¥15 million (US$2.25 million), making it the most expensive television series in China.
Casting

On January 14, 2016, it was announced that Zhou Xun will play the leading role of Ulanara, the Step Empress. The role of Qianlong Emperor, the male lead, was announced to be portrayed by Wallace Huo on May 27. On August 4, actors Janine Chang, Vivian Wu, Dong Jie, Tong Yao, and Jing Chao were cast in lead roles for the drama. Janine Chang, Vivian Wu and Dong Jie would play the respective roles of Noble Consort Yu, Empress Xiaoshengxian and Empress Xiaoxianchun.
Filming

Shooting began on 23 August 2016 and took place in various locations including Hengdian World Studios, Beijing, Inner Mongolia, and Hangzhou.
International broadcast

Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace set to air on Zhejiang Television 、Anhui Television、Shenzhen Television and Dragon Television and will premiere in late 2017.
On 10 June 2016, Fox Networks Group Asia (FNG) and Turner Broadcasting System Asia has acquired global rights outside mainland China to the series. It is the first epic period drama secured by FNG for markets outside China, and it will be carried by STAR Chinese Channel (SCC), the flagship Chinese general entertainment channel and Oh!K the Korean and Chinese Entertainment Channel,as Same Time as China with in 48 hours available.
