The United States Census Bureau defines the Rochester, Minnesota Metropolitan Statistical Area as an area consisting of three counties in southeast Minnesota, anchored by the city of Rochester. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 186,011. However, as of 2012, the Rochester metropolitan area – as distinct from the Metropolitan Statistical Area – had an estimated population of 209,607.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.35% of the population.
The median income for a household in the MSA was $46,957, and the median income for a family was $55,450. Males had a median income of $35,815 versus $26,738 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $21,287.
