Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), formerly known as Nagpur University, is a public state university, established on August 4, 1923 in the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra state in central India. It is one of the oldest universities in India and the second oldest in the state of Maharashtra, after the University of Mumbai. It is named after Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj, a renowned spiritual person from Vidarbha. It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It has been accredited with the A grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), New Delhi. It has been consistently ranked among the top Universities in India.
Contents
History
The University was established as Nagpur university on 4 August 1923 with six affiliated colleges and 927 students. During 1947, the number of students increased to about 9000 accompanied by the improvement and diversification of curricula and expansion in the range of subjects. The expansion of library and sports facilities occurred during these years for the intellectual and physical well being of the students. It was in 1958 that some new Departments in Arts and Social Science faculties were opened; the major expansion, however, came in 1963 when several science and other teaching Departments were started. The departments were shifted to spacious buildings in the main campus in 1972-73. In later years, several career oriented courses have been started viz., Business Management, Fine Arts, Mass Communication, Library Science, Physical Education, etc. In May 1983, the university was divided to form Amravati University. In September 2011 the university was again divided to part way for the Gondwana University. In 2005, the university was renamed to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University after Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj, a renowned spiritual person from Vidarbha.
Jurisdiction
Initially the university had a jurisdiction extending over 11 districts of eastern Maharashtra particularly called Vidarbha. With the establishment of Amravati University in Amravati in 1983, the jurisdiction was restricted to six districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Bhandara and Gondia. Out of these, two districts Chandrapur and Gadchiroli were transferred to the Gondwana University established in September 2011. Since then, the university has jurisidiction over districts of Nagpur, Wardha,Bhandara and Gondia.

Faculties and Departments
The University comprises the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Science, Social Sciences, Home Science, Medicine, Commerce, Education, Engineering & Technology, Law, and Ayurveda consisting of 39 Postgraduate teaching departments (PGTD) and three constituent colleges/institutions (Law college, College of Education, Laxminarayan Institute of Technology). The department and conducted college/institution buildings are spread over seven campuses with an overall area of 327 acres. There are 842 colleges affiliated to the university in the districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara and Gondia in the state of Maharashtra.
Research
The research programs in almost all thirty-nine Departments and three conducted Colleges are propelled through M. Phil., Ph. D. and Post-Doc.
Library
The Bhausaheb Kolte Library (Main library) was started along with the establishment of the University in 1923 in order to cater to the academic and research needs of the faculty and students. Earlier the library was housed in University main building itself. The foundation stone of the building was laid on the 29th March , 1954. The building was designed to have two floors with a total floor area of 57,480 sq.ft. and to provide a stacking capacity in 4 tiers to hold 3,50,000 volumes approximately, and accommodate 250 readers in general. The work commenced and it took almost three years to complete the construction of the building and the university library shifted to its new premises in July 1957.
The P. V. Narasimha Rao Library (Campus library) was inaugurated on 5th December 1978. A large number of volumes and the Manuscript Section of Main Library was transferred to this Campus Library.

There are a total of 842 colleges affiliated to the University. The prominent colleges affiliated to the University are Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (established in 1885 as Morris college), College of Agriculture Nagpur (founded in 1906), Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, Government College of Engineering, Nagpur, Government College of Architecture and Government Polytechnic, Nagpur.
