Pranav Mohanlal (born 13 July 1990) is an Indian actor known for his work in Malayalam films. The son of actor Mohanlal, he began acting as a child with his screen debut in his father's film Onnaman (2002) in a minor role, followed by a leading role in Punarjani in the same year. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist for his role in Punarjani. He then decided to abandon films to focus on his studies. Since then, he has kept a distance from the film industry and was not keen on returning to pursue acting. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of New South Wales.

Early and personal life

Pranav Mohanlal was born on 13 July 1990 in Trivandrum, Kerala in India as the son of actor Mohanlal and his wife Suchitra Balaji. He has a younger sister, Vismaya Mohanlal. His maternal-grandfather is the Tamil film producer K. Balaji. Pranav completed his schooling staying in a boarding school, the Hebron School, Ooty in Tamil Nadu. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Pranav maintains a low-profile lifestyle.

Pranav made his screen debut in 2002, appearing in a minor role in the action crime drama Onnaman starring his father Mohanlal and directed by Thampi Kannanthanam. He played the childhood self of his father's character Ravisankar. In the same year, he made to his first leading role in Punarjani, a drama film directed by Major Ravi and Rajesh Amanakara. He played Appu, a troubled child who run away from home as he thinks his parents loves his younger brother over him. His performance earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist. After that, he took a break to concentrate on his studies. He was not interest in returning to pursue acting. In between, he made a cameo appearance in a song in Sagar Alias Jackie Reloaded in 2009. Director Priyadarshan, who is also a close friend of Mohanlal once said in an interview: "He [Pranav] is a terrific actor. I have seen him act in plays in school and he was selected as the best actor too. In fact, I would say he is better than the father. But, now, he says he does not want to be [in] cinema".

In 2014, Pranav began working as an assistant director under Jeethu Joseph in the Tamil film Papanasam starring Kamal Hassan. The film was released in 2015. He continued working as an assistant in Jeethu's subsequent film Life of Josutty before departing. On 30 September 2016, it was announced that he will be returning as an actor in his first adult role in the film to be directed by Jeethu Joseph and produced by Aashirvad Cinemas. The film titled Aadhi held a pooja function on 5 July 2017 along with the principal photography. The regular filming commence in August 2017.

Accolades

Pranav is the recipient of 2002 Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist for his performance as a troubled child named Appu in the film Punarjani.
