Geography

Mahendragarh is located at 28.28°N 76.15°E / 28.28; 76.15. It has an average elevation of 262 metres (859 feet). Mahendragarh district is bounded on the north by Bhiwani and Rohtak districts, on the east by Rewari district and Alwar district of Rajasthan, on the south by Alwar, Jaipur and Sikar districts of Rajasthan, and on the west by Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan. It has four tehsils of Narnaul, Kanina,Nangal choudhary And Mahendergarh.

It is named after Maharaja Mahendra Singh Patiala who was the ruler during the Mughal era in 1721-1748. It is situated at the bank of Dohan river (which was a seasonal river), which is at the verge of extinction.

History

Rao Shekha, a Shekhawat rajput (sub-branch of Kachwaha or Kushwaha), was the founder of Shekhawati, who originally divided Shekhawati into 33 Thikana (also called a Pargana), each styled as Thakur with at least a 'kuccha' mud fort, some of which were fortified further with stone. After him, additional thikanas were granted to the descendants of subsequent generations.

  • Loharu Thikana, Loharu was founded as 33rd Thikana in the year 1588 A.D by the Thakur Narhar Das, a decedent of Rao Shekha.
  • Tosham Shekhavati Thikana, It was granted as a thikana by Shekhawati ruler Maharaja Mukund Singh in 1870 to Kunwar Abhaya Singh, the son of Maharaja Raj Singh II.
  • Madhogarh Thikana and Madhogarh Fort were founded by Madho Singh I in the first half of the 18th century, when he placed the area under the control of his son Balwant Singh.
  • Mahendragarh Thikana, was granted by 'Maharaja Mukund Singh of Shekhawati in 1868 to Kunwar Sheonath Singh I, the son of Maharaja Raj Singh II. Around 1755, Rajputs of this area and all of central and south Haryana came under the Maratha Empire under Maharaja Khande Rao Holkar of Indore when he attacked the independent Mughal chieftain Ismail Beg, Ismail Beg escaped to Madhogarh and established a post near Madhogarh fort, captured Ismail Beg at kanud, imprisoned him at Agra Fort and put him to death on 1794. Maratha Maharaj Mahadaji Shinde (Scindia) of Gwalior had conquered Rania, Fatehabad and Sirsa from Bhatti Rajput Muslims. Haryana came under Maratha Empire. Mahad ji divided Haryana in four territories: Delhi (Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, his family and areas surrounding Delhi), Panipat (Kernal, Sonepat, Kurukshetra and Ambala), Hisar (Hisar, Sirsa, Fatehabad, parts of Rohtak), Mewat (Gurugaon, Rewari, Narnaul, Mahendragarh). Daulat Rao Scindia ceded Haryana on 30 December 1803 under the Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon to British East India Company's Company rule in India. Thakurs (rulers) of Mahendragargh are:

  • Education

    With various leading schools and colleges, Mahendragarh has become as the education hub of India. Central University of Haryana has been established in Mahendergarh having campus area of 488 acre. Mahendragarh has various engineering colleges as well. Mahendergarh is hub of international level schools with ultra modern amenities with high class of study level where students from Delhi, Rajasthan, UP, Punjab etc. getting education to achieve their dreams. Mahendergarh has maximum number of education colleges in Haryana state.     Demographics

    As of 2011 India census, Mahendragarh had a population of 60,000. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mahendragarh has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 57%. In Mahendragarh, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. Hindus constitute 98% of the population.

    In spite of being a district headquarters, there is no administrative office. All the relevant work is done in Narnaul. The very first guggul (Commiphora wightii) vatika (place where medicinal plants are planted) was established here.

    Now many government offices have opened in Mahendragarh near Government Boys college in new Court.

    Social groups

    According to Haryana District Gazetteers: Mahendragarh Ahirs and Rajputs form the agricultural backbone of the district. However Yaduvanshi Ahirs are in majority in the district. Election results are mainly influenced by Ahirs.
