Kyegegwa District is a district in Western Uganda. It is named after its 'chief town', Kyegegwa, where the district headquarters are located.

Location

Kyegegwa District is bordered by Kibaale District to the north, Mubende District to the east, Kiruhura District to the south, Kamwenge District to the southwest and Kyenjojo District to the northwest. Kyegegwa, the location of the district headquarters, is located approximately 110 kilometres (68 mi), by road, east of Fort Portal, the largest town in the sub-region. The coordinates of the district are:00 29N, 31 03E.

Overview

Kyegegwa District was created by Act of the Ugandan Parliament, on 1 July 2009. Prior to that the district was part of Kyenjojo District. Kyegegwa District is part of Toro sub-region, which is coterminous with Toro Kingdom. The districts that constitute the sub-region include: (a) Kabarole District (b) Kamwenge District (c) Kyegegwa District and (d) Kyenjojo District. According to the 2002 national census, the sub-region was home to an estimated one million people at that time.

Population

In 1991, the national population census estimated the district population at about 63,500. The national census in 2002 estimated the population of the district at about 110,900. In 2012, the mid-year population of the district was estimated at about 159,800.

The district has one County; Kyaka, one Town Council; Kyegegwa, seven sub-counties; namely: 1. Hapuuyo 2. Kakabara 3. Kasule 4. Kyegegwa 5. Mpara 6. Ruyonza and 7. Rwentuha. The sub counties are further divided in 42 parishes (also called wards) and 459 villages. 93% of the population live in rural areas.

  • One of the major sources of income of Kyegegwa is Markets, mainly Rwensasi market. Rwensasi market is located in Ruyonza sub-county, Kyaka South, Kyegegwa distrct.The market is found in the South Western part of the district 12km along Kyegegwa-Katonga road.

    Rwensasi market is a farmers' group business [Mpara Farmers Association] initiated by Katuramu George william in 1998. It was formed after the closure of Nyarubabo market in 1992, due to east-coast fever.

    Rwensasi market contributes 60% of Ruyonza sub county and 40% of Kyegegwa district.

    Commodities sold in Rwensasi market include;

    * Animals ie cows,goats and sheep * Birds like hens,ducks and turkeys * Agricultural produce * General merchandise.

    Rwensasi market operates on Thursday of every week and accommodates approximately 500 traders,and entertains more than 1000 buyers.
