Early life

Butler was born in Wellington, New Zealand, and moved with his family to the Gold Coast, Australia as a 13-year-old. He attended The Southport School.
Career

During the 2012 Super Rugby season, Butler joined the on a short-term contract to cover an injury crisis. He made his debut 6 July 2012 against the Highlanders at Suncorp Stadium.

He made two appearances for them in 2012 which prompted Head-Coach to name him in the franchise's Extended Playing Squad for 2013.

Since which he has been capped a further 10 times, throughout the 2013 Super Rugby season - upgrading him to a Standard Player Contract (SPC).
On 11 July 2017, it was announced that Butler had signed a three-year contract with Irish Pro14 side Connacht. He will move to the province at the end of the 2017 Super Rugby season.
