Gabiley (Somali: Gabileh, Arabic: غابيلي‎‎), also known as Gebiley, is a town in the northwestern Woqooyi Galbeed province of Somaliland, a self-declared republic that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia.

Location

Gabiley is located 54 km west of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. The center of the Gabiley sub-region, it is bounded on the north by the Gulf of Aden, on the west by the Awdal region, on the east by Hargeisa, and on the south by the Somali Region of Ethiopia.

Because the majority of the people in the district have been settled there for the last 300 years, there are more major and minor towns in Gabiley district than anywhere else in Somaliland.

    Gabiley is one of the oldest towns in northern Somalia after Zeila, Berbera and Amud. Some stones left behind in the area were believed to have been earmarked for the construction of pyramids.

    Demographics

    Gabiley has a population of around 79,675 inhabitants. The broader Gabiley District has a total population of 135,430 residents.

    Gabiley is mainly inhabited by people from the Somali ethnic group. As of the late 1980s, the Jibriil Abokor sub-clans of the Habar Awal Isaaq were the main inhabitants of Gabiley.

    Education

    Primary education is available throughout the district. The latter includes the smaller communities, which have their own primary schools. For post-secondary education, Timacade University was opened in 1999 to serve the needs of the town's students.

    Services

    Gabiley has one operating general hospital. Opened in 2010, it provides medical services to the larger region. In 2016 the municipal government was led by Mahamed-Amiin Omer Abdi.

    Agriculture

    Gabiley is noted for its agricultural and farming industry, and is where most of the region's crops are produced. Crops grown in the area include corn, maize, wheat and barley, beans, peas and groundnuts, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, salad and cabbages, oranges, watermelon and papaya.

    Notable residents

  • Mo Farah, British 4 time Olympic gold medalist and the most decorated athlete in British athletics history, He belongs to the Jibriil Abokor clan.
  • Abdillahi Suldaan Mohammed Timacade, A renowned poet Somali poet during the pre- and post-colonial periods who was from Galooley, and regularly used to visit friends and relatives in Kalabaydh. He reportedly would also conduct public readings in the area.
  • Mohammed Abdillahi Ogsadey, was a Somali business tycoon based in Ethiopia, where he established MAO Harar Horse, the first African corporation to export coffee. He belongs to the Reer Dalal subclan of the Jibriil Abokor clan.
  • Sheekh Muhumed Warsame, Islamic religious leader and founder of the modern town of Gabiley. He belongs to the Reer Dalal subclan of the Jibriil Abokor clan.
