Overview

The city is located near Las Anod Sool, not to be confused with the other Kalabaydh situated between Tog Wajaale and Hargeisa. Its name Kalabaydh (meaning "crossroads") is derived from the town's location at the juncture of these settlements.

Local control is disputed between Somaliland, Puntland and Khatumo State (formerly HBM-SSC or Hoggaanka Badbaadada iyo Mideynta SSC).

History

On the outskirts of the town is a site called 'Lafta Nabadeed', named after an historic tree situated near the local water wells. The renowned poet Abdillahi Suldaan Mohammed Timacade, who was from Galooley, regularly used to visit friends and relatives in Kalabaydh. He reportedly would also conduct public readings in the area.

Economy

Kalabaydh's residents are primarily pastoralists. They raise cattle, sheep and goats, supplemented by cultivation of cereals such as maze and sorghum.

Education

Kalabaydh has a number of academic institutions. According to the Puntland Ministry of Education, there are 8 primary schools in the Kalabaydh District. Among these are Kalabayr Primary, Saaxdheer, Xidh-Xidh and Qorilay. Secondary schools in the area include Kalabayr Secondary.
