David James Gandy (born 19 February 1980) is a British model. After winning a televised competition in 2001, Gandy became a successful model. In an industry dominated by extremely thin men, Gandy's muscular build caught the eye of Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana. For several years, the duo featured him in their campaigns and fashion shows, ultimately leading other designers to move to a more masculine standard. Gandy has been the face of D&G's Light Blue fragrance since 2006, shooting multiple campaigns and touring internationally as the brand's ambassador. The increase in his popularity and name recognition resulted in a broad portfolio of clients, magazine covers, editorial photo shoots, interviews, industry awards and television appearances.

Background

David Gandy David Gandy Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

Gandy was born in Billericay, Essex, England, the son of parents who owned property and freight companies. In his youth, he wanted to be a veterinary surgeon but his school grades weren't high enough. While attending university, he went to work for Auto Express, delivering the latest Porsches and Jaguars to the track for testing. Before graduating from the University of Gloucestershire, where he was studying multi-media computing and marketing, Gandy's flatmate entered him (without his knowledge) into a model-search competition on ITV's This Morning hosted by Richard and Judy. On 27 June 2001, the 21-year-old Gandy won the competition which included a contract with Select Model Management in London.

During the early years of his career, Gandy modelled for a variety of companies including: Shiatzy Chen, 7 for all Mankind, Zara, Gant USA, Hugo Boss, Russell & Bromley, H&M, Carolina Herrera, Massimo Dutti and others. In 2006, when most of the male models working runways and advertisements were skinny and androgynous, Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana chose the muscular 6ft 3in tall Gandy to be the face of their apparel campaigns and fashion shows. For more than six years, he was featured prominently by the duo, working with female supermodels such as Gemma Ward, Scarlett Johansson, Gisele Bündchen and Naomi Campbell as well as male models Noah Mills, Tony Ward, Adam Senn and others.

Gandy was initially best known for the 2007 advert of Dolce & Gabbana's fragrance 'Light Blue' with Marija Vujović (shot in 2006 by photographer Mario Testino) which had 11,000,000 online views and saw a 50-foot billboard of him displayed in Times Square. He also modelled for their limited-edition 2008 calendar, shot by photographer, Mariano Vivanco. In 2009, portrait and fashion photographer Rankin recreated seven iconic photographs in a BBC Four Special entitled, "Seven Photographs That Changed Fashion." He selected Gandy to recreate 'Fred with Tires', originally shot by Herb Ritts in 1984.

Gandy returned as the face of the second 'Light Blue' fragrance campaign for 2010, but this time with Anna Jagodzinska. He also made a short promotional film for W Hotels with Helena Christensen called "Away We Stay". In 2011, the fashion house published "David Gandy by Dolce & Gabbana", a 280-page photographic coffee table book of images chronicling their years of collaboration and they hosted public events in Milan where Gandy met fans and signed autographs. In 2013, Dolce & Gabbana released the third version of the 'Light Blue' fragrance campaign featuring Gandy. Once again, Mario Testino filmed the adverts and commercial on location in the island of Capri, in southern Italy but this time with Italian model Bianca Balti in the female role. Mid-year, Bionda Castana, a British shoe label, released a fashion film featuring Gandy called "David Gandy's Goodnight." In May 2015, Gandy announced the addition of swimwear to the 'Gandy for Autograph' range with Marks and Spencer. The collection of underwear and loungewear had been successful (with several items selling out immediately) so Gandy marked the one-year anniversary by expanding the range for Autumn 2015 with new designs, fabrics and colours. He continued to represent Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue fragrance at meet-and-greet events in Sydney and Singapore. The department store Palacio de Hierro Polanco in Mexico City was extensively refurbished and its reopening was promoted in October and November 2015 by a campaign featuring Gandy, Carmen Dell'Orefice and Isabeli Fontana.

The commercial and still photos were once again shot by Mario Testino.
