The Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) is a pioneering, premier degree commerce college in western India, situated in the city of Pune, Maharashtra. The College was established in 1943 by the Deccan Education Society with a view to providing enlightened leadership and trained manpower in the field of commerce and business to the country which was on the threshold of independence. Late Shri C. G. Agashe, the Managing Agent of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd., was instrumental in getting a magnificent donation of Rs 2,00,000/- for the college from the Syndicate. Hence the college was named as the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce. The college is affiliated with the University of Pune. The college has produced many notable leaders, businessmen and industrialists like Sharad Pawar, Saurabh Gadgil, Cyrus Poonawalla, Sulajja Firodia, Dnyaneshwar Agashe (aforementioned Shri C. G. Agashe's son) and his son, cricketer Ashutosh Agashe.

The college has two sections; The Junior Wing of the college is for students graduating from school and it offers course in commerce stream for them, at the end of which students may appear for the Higher-Secondary State Certificate examination. The Senior Wing offers bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees in commerce, business and computer applications. The college also offers doctoral and autonomous programs. BMCC offers Masters in Business Administration (MBA) course from the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.

Prof. D. G. Karve, a renowned Economist and some time Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India was the First Principal of the College. Situated at the foot of the rugged Fergusson College Hill and dotted with lush green trees and shrubs all around, it has a most picturesque and inviting atmosphere. BMCC has recently earned the award of 'College with potential for excellence' from UGC.

History

Prof. D G Karve, the first principal of the college, stated the mission of the college as "To make a citizen of India as fully endowed materially, intellectually and morally as the citizens of the most advanced country of the world is our collective aim. All activities connected with the College will be consciously correlated to this declared objective of the society." It started as the College of Commerce in the Amphi theatre of the Fergusson College on June 20, 1943. Sir Ardeshir Dalal formally inaugurated the college on June 24, 1943. Late Shri C. G. Agashe, managing agent of Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Limited donated Rs 2 lakhs to the college, which was renamed as the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce. The naming ceremony was performed by Sir Chintamanrao Deshmukh, the then Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, on November 11, 1944.

Till 1949, BMCC was affiliated with the Bombay University, which had a larger province under its jurisdiction. At that time also, BMCC was recognised as one of the best colleges. After 1949, it got affiliated with University of Pune.

Golden Jubilee

BMCC celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1993-94, when an ambitious academic project named CGA - BMTRC (Chandrashekhar Govind Agashe Business Motivation, Training and Research Centre) was undertaken. The CGA BMTRC Building, the Nav Maharashtra Hall and the Computer Laboratory were inaugurated on 2 August 1998.

Diamond Jubilee

In 2005, the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated by the college in a befitting manner. Prime Minister and noted economist of the country, Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Chief Guest. The 'Prin. D. G. Karve Chair in Commerce & Economics', an academic activity for research and development was launched at this occasion.

    The college has excellent infra-structural facilities in terms of class-rooms, two major assembly halls, two-storeyed building for well-stocked library, staff quarters, a full-fledged sports ground, students' hostel and common rooms for boys and girls.

    Main Building

    The office is located in the main building. Also the B.com, 11th and 12th classes take place in this building

    Library

    The library building admeasuring 1400sq.ft. was constructed in 1973 in a two storied building. A separate spacious library building with two reading halls is significant assets of the college. The first has a seating capacity of sixty where as the second with a larger capacity of 450 is on the first floor of the library. The library building has section for issue and receipt of books, adequate stacking facility for books and journals on a separate floor, a section for journal and magazine, seven cubicles for teaching staff and research scholars and a separate provision for reprography is also there. The Computer Center of the college comes under the purview of the Computer Center Committee under the Chairmanship of the Principal and Head of the Department is In-charge of the routine activities. The Computer Center remains open from 8.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

    Gymkhana and Ground

    The college has very large ground approximately of 3 acres. The indoor and outdoor games and sports facilities are available in the college campus. Orientation programme is conducted every year to make the students aware of the sports facilities available to them. The college conducts special coaching programmes by appointing expert coaches for various sports events. Sports - Gymnasium: The gymnasium of the college has been shifted to the new building number two after renovating the interiors. Many latest equipments like Leg Press, Standard size trade mills, Pairs of dumbbells of different weights has been added to the gymnasium.

    Commerce Laboratory

    BMCC has established the Commerce Laboratory in the year 2003, wherein several study-projects for entrepreneurial development are undertaken by the students. These include business case studies, Study of the success stories of business icons, study of autobiographies of industrialists, charts and models based on the industrial survey etc. It is an ongoing activity to bridge up a gap between the theory part of education and the practical aspect of it.

    Computer Laboratory

    The institution has up-to-date computer facility for teaching learning process, administrative process and library. It has two well equipped computer laboratories for different courses related to ITC. The central computer laboratory is used for the autonomous vocational courses. The computers in the administration office have LAN connectivity within the office and offices of the Principal and Vice Principal. The computers in the computer library and college library are LAN connected. All the computers in the college premises possess the licensed software.

    TATA Assembly Hall

    The auditorium is aesthetically designed and is used for addressing the students, for conducting guest lectures and workshops and organizing social and cultural events. In house publication: The in house journals were started in the college from the year 2000-2001. The journals are a creation of the students, by the students. The journals provide a platform to the students to express their views on the burning topics of the day, conduct surveys and interact wit torch bearers of different fields. It also acts as a medium for creative outlet and helps students to realize their latent talents through the different processes involved in the creation of journals.

    Research Centre

    BMCC is one of the few institutes in Pune city to have a sophisticated modern language laboratory with five foreign languages being taught presently. The language laboratory has twenty five booths with listening and recording facility. The students enrich themselves by learning foreign language of their choice.

    Malanbhai Doshi Hall/Ladies Common Room

    A new ladies common room of 1200sq.ft, with water cooler and attached toilet facility is provided to female students in a separate building.

    Boys' Hostel

    The students staying in the hostel are provided subsidized mess facility. The committee takes into consideration the problems of the hostelites and tries to solve them. The committee participates in different college activities like celebration of Teachers' Day, organization of seminars, workshops and special programmes for hostelites.

    Canteen

    A spacious and lovely canteen with a capacity of fifty students is located near the gymkhana.

    Maitri Sabhagruha/Audio Visual Hall

    'Maitri Sabhagruha' is a well equipped Audio-Visual Hall developed out of the gratitude fund provided by two illustrious past students - Dr. Vikram Mehta & Shri. Kantilal Baldota. The air conditioned A.V.Hall with the latest technology is used for seminars, presentations, recording, guest lectures, etc. It has a seat capacity of eighty.

    Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla Conference Hall

    The newly constructed air conditioned conference hall with a seat capacity of two hundred is used for seminars, guest lecturers and gathering of students class wise or department wise.

    New Building No. III

    This is the largest among all the building in the campus where non- grant courses like, BBA, BBA(CA), BBA(IB), and post graduate diploma courses are conducted. The new building comprises nine big size class rooms and two medium size class rooms with LCD fixed in each of them. It also has a computer laboratory and an office for the coordinator of the non -grant courses.

    PNG Language Laboratory

    It is well equipped with state-of-the-art communication equipment and gadgets. Training is given to the students to appear for BEC (Business English Certificate) Examination, conducted by the University of Cambridge. This project is supported by a generous donation from M/s P. N. Gadgil & company.

    Awards and Rankings

    In 2009, Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce was awarded an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). BMCC has been selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and awarded the status of 'College with Potential for Excellence' (CPE). In 2005, BMCC was ranked third in top ten commerce collges surveyed by India Today magazine.

    The College has been recognized with several awards and prizes in the recent past. It won the First Prize from the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai for Annual Magazine 'Artha Vyavahar - 2001'. It received the 'Best College Award' of the University of Pune in February, 2002 under the Quality Improvement Programme. The college also received the 'Best NSS Unit Award' of the University of Pune in February, 2004. Several teachers and administrative staff members of the college have also been felicitated by the University, Pune Municipal Corporation and many other social bodies for their outstanding contribution. Recently, the annual magazine 'Artha Vyavahar' has been recognized by the University with Best Magazine Award.
