History of the Institute

History of the Institute begins from December 1944, when Special design bureau of trust “Promsteelconstruction” was opened in Kiev. The main task of this bureau was development of projects on renewal and reconstruction of bridges, industrial buildings and other objects destroyed during Second World War. Then design bureau was renamed as design firm “Projectsteelconstruction”. In 1960, State Design Institute (SDI) “Ukrprojectsteelconstruction” was established on the basis of the firm. In 1980, new director was assigned for the Institute – it was professor Vitaliy Nikolayevich Shimanovsky, corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Dc. Sc. (Eng.). Many specialists associate his name with plenty of progressive steps in branch of design.

In 1983, SDI “Ukrprojectsteelconstruction” was re-organized into research and design Institute “Ukrainian Research and Design Institute of Steel Construction”, which became one of the leading research institutes in branch of metal structures on the territory of USSR. The Institute structure included complex for fabrication and erection of metal structures, which included Brovary metal structures plant, and also seven organization departments – Donbass center of technological safety and complex departments in Mariupol, Poltava, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Lugansk and Odessa.

In June 1994, in accordance with decree of President of Ukraine No. 210/93 from 15 June 1993 “About corporatization of state enterprises”, Institute was re-organized into open joint-stock company. In 1997, the Institute “Ukrainian Research and Design Institute of Steel Construction” was included into the list of scientific technical organizations, which have strategical meaning for country economy and safety, by the decree of cabinet council of Ukraine.

In 2000, after the death of Vitaliy Nikolayevich Shimanovsky, the Institute was named after him.

V.N. Shimanovsky was the head of the Institute for twenty years, made a great contribution to its development, created its scientific part and preserved it as integral organization during period of economic recession in 1990s. More than ten thousand projects were developed under the leadership of Vitaliy Nikolayevich and with his direct participation. These projects include bridges and towers, slip docks and metal structures plants, frameworks of unique buildings and facilities. In 2010, in order to comply with requirements of law of Ukraine No. 514-VI from 17 September 2008 “About joint-stock companies” OJSC “V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Research and Design Institute of Steel Construction” changed its legal organizational form by transformation into limited liability company “V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction”.

In different years, the Institute was headed by: B.P. Petrov, O.I. Shumitskiy, A.I. Isayev, I.A. Nechayev, V.N. Shimanovsky. In 2011, A.V. Shimanovsky, the corresponding member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, honored scientist of Ukraine, Dc. Sc. (Eng.), professor became general director of LLC “V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction”. Team of engineers and scientists, who created intellectual centre of group, was formed in Institute: V.N. Shimanovsky, O.I. Shumitskiy, P.M. Sosis, V.I. Kireyenko, L.G. Dmitriyev, А.V. Kasilov, V.N. Gordeiev, А.V. Perelmuter, М.P. Kondra, I.N. Lebedich, R.B. Kharchenko, А.S. Gorodetskiy, V.B. Barskiy, Y.S. Borisenko, М.L. Grinberg, А.Y. Pritsker, V.L. Geifman, I.L. Ovdiyenko and dozens of other bright personalities.

Scientific and technical activity

V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction is leading scientific and technical design institute in building complex of Ukraine. It fulfills functions of basic organization of the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, and Communal Living of Ukraine in branch of metal building. According to results of governmental certification, the Institute is rated as organization, which defines state scientific and technical policy in building branch.

Specialists of the Institute participate in work of Scientific Coordination and Expert Council on problems of resources and safe maintenance of structures, buildings and machines under presidium of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Inter-departmental commission on issues of scientific and technical safety under Council of National Safety and Defense of Ukraine and Scientific and Technical Council of Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, and Communal Living of Ukraine.

V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction, as basic organization of Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, and Communal Living of Ukraine, took part in development of Concept of State program of ensuring technical safety in main economy branches (in part of building metal structures). This Concept provides development of State scientific technical program “Resource”, and also branch and regional programs used for realization of state policy on ensuring safety and safe maintenance of buildings and facilities in particular branch and region.

Technical committee for standardization 301 “Metal building” was established by order of Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, and Communal Living of Ukraine with aim of improving national standardization in branch of building and building materials industry. V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction, which has many-years experience in development of building normative documents, is authorized to execute functions of this technical committee secretariat.

Engineering design activities

One of important tasks of the Institute in start was the development of project of all-welded bridge across Dnepr river in Kiev – the Paton bridge, executed in cooperation with E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute. Many pedestrian bridges across rivers were constructed according to the Institute projects: across river Dnieper – in city Kiev, across river Teterev – in city Zhytomir, across river Uzh – in city Korosten, and also suspension piping bridges across rivers Angara and Ural. Project of curvilinear bridge across Dnepr with lightweight steel roadway was developed during reconstruction of passage on Dnieper hydroelectric station dam.

Specialists of the Institute reached success in design of all-welded high-rise TV towers. These are realized projects of TV towers in Kiev, St. Petersburg, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Kharkov, metal antenna masts of height 260 m for broadcasting stations, unified towers for TV retransmitters and radio relay lines.

Specialists of the Institute managed to execute difficult and creative tasks of development and erection of bearing structures “Mother Motherland” monument on the territory of Second World War museum and monument dedicated to declaration of independence of Ukraine.

Institute took part in design and building of many large and complicated industrial objects, including metallurgical works and metal structures manufacturing plants. Projects of the Institute have been used for building and reconstruction of Novo-Lypetsk metallurgic plant workshop, Tevosyan plant “Electrostal” (Russian Federation), metallurgic plants in Bokaro (India), Seydişehir (Turkey), Annaba (Algeria), Ajaokuta (Nigeria) and other plants.

Along with industrial-purposed objects, the Institute has developed projects of bearing metal structures for large public buildings, such as “Ukraine” palace, high-rise hotel “Kiev”, Trade house in Kiev, cultural centre “Ukrainian house”, train station complex of station Kiev-Passenger and others. The International exhibition center in Kiev on Brovarsky avenue and National complex “Expocenter of Ukraine” are the examples of erection of trade and exhibition centers in metal structures.

The Institute has designed engineering facilities on trunk oil- and gas-pipelines, vessels of different tankage for oil and oil products. In 2003, the Institute designed vessel of volume 75000 m3 for linear production station “Brody”, which is the only intermediate pump station on Ukrainian part of oil pipeline “Druzhba” and performs transit pumping of Russian oil in two oil pipeline lines. This vessel then was constructed according to design of the Institute. Along with this, the Institute designs raw oil storages for oil refineries of Ukraine, particularly, raw materials park for open joint-stock company “Naftokhimik-Prykarpattia” in town Nadvornaya, Ivano-Frankovsk region, and other reserve systems.

Among sport objects, developed by the Institute, should be mentioned “Yubileyniy” stadium in city Sumy, which is granted by State award of Ukraine (2004) and sports complex “Olimp” in city Uzhniy (near Odessa), which is granted by State award in branch of architecture (2006). In 2004, the Institute together with Ukrainian Academy of Architecture developed propositions concerning reconstruction of Kiev stadium “Dynamo”. In 2006, stand roof of “Metallurg” stadium in Dnepropetrovsk was designed and constructed. Totally, specialists of the Institute have developed about 30 000 projects of buildings and facilities of different purpose for 40 countries of the world.

Е.О. Paton bridge, Kiev

The bridge was built in 1953. General design was executed together with E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute. In 2001, design of bridge roadway reconstruction was developed.

TV tower of Kiev

TV tower was designed and built according to technical task and order of the USSR Ministry of Communications. Leading design, construction and mounting organizations were involved in erection of TV tower on all stages.

Journal “The industrial construction and engineering structures”

This journal specializes on articles about architecture, design, building of industrial-purposed objects and engineering structures, and also new research results in branch of technical diagnostics, development and improving of metal building normative base etc. Journal is included into the list of core publications on technical science and also into the list of scientific specialized publications, in which the main results of dissertation works may be published.

Journal is published quarterly.

The collection of proceedings of the V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction

The collection of proceedings includes articles with research results in branch of calculation and design of structures; theoretical and structural mechanics; theory of elasticity and plasticity; development of calculation and design methods for structures, buildings and facilities, development of rational types of structures, and also experimental theoretical research of elements and connections work, improvement of materials, manufacturing and erection technology, repair and reconstruction of buildings and facilities, development and improvement of normative base in building branch.

The collection of proceedings of the V.N. Shimanovsky Ukrainian Institute of Steel Construction is included into the list of core publications on technical science and also into the list of scientific specialized publications, in which the main results of dissertation works may be published.
