It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Pirkanmaa region, near Forssa. The municipality has a population of 4,919 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 475.18 square kilometres (183.47 sq mi) of which 30.16 km2 (11.64 sq mi) is water. The population density is 10.35 inhabitants per square kilometre (26.8/sq mi).

Neighbouring municipalities are Akaa, Forssa, Humppila, Hämeenlinna, Punkalaidun, Sastamala, Tammela, and Vesilahti.

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
