At the North end of the lake is Gmunden, at the south end is Ebensee. The lake is surrounded by mountains, including the Traunstein, and a number of other towns and villages surround the lake, including Altmünster and Traunkirchen.

Traunsee lake is also home to a lake monster known as "Lungy". In Austrian folklore, The legends tell of a Waterhorse being ridden on the back by a Mermaid that resides in the waters. There are photos and videos online showing what appears to be a large creature swimming in the lake. The very first photograph of the creature was taken by an English tourist in July 2013.
