The Tanker SS Gulfwave (1937–1959) was a 7100 DWT tanker 6545 tons under deck with a net tonnage of 4381 tons.

History

The SS Gulfwave was built in Bethlehem Steel Company, Sparrows Point MD shipyard as Hull #4324 and was delivered to the Gulf Oil Company on 1 December 1937. Her call sign was WPPL. She was a sister ship to the SS Gulfdisc

On 1 March 1943 the ship was torpedoed by IJN submarine I-10 under the command of Commander Kinzo Tonozuka IJN south of Tonga at 20 30S-174 45E. Gulfwave arrives at Suva, Fiji under her own power and suffers no casualties to either her merchant crew or the Armed Guard. Temporary repairs are made at Suva. Gulfwave then arrives in Pago Pago 29 March 1943 for further repairs. Left 5/13/1943 for Hawaii. Perm Repairs at Portland.

The Gulfwave was renamed the Michael J. in 1956 and scrapped in 1959

In the 1938 - 1939 Lloyd's she was listed the same except that they noted she was fitted for fuel oil Mchy aft Cruiser Stern 2 Dks
