Description, Location, Importance and History
In 1858 the Rosenheim–Kufstein–Innsbruck line was opened and in 1876 a new station at Rosenheim was built, after the old one (the present-day town hall or Rathaus) that had been used for 18 years had already proved to be too small.
Rosenheim station is a major Regionalbahn and Regional-Express hub. Every hour trains arrive from Salzburg, Munich, Innsbruck, Kreuzstraße/Holzkirchen and Mühldorf am Inn roughly at the same time and depart a few minutes later. In addition Eurocity trains from Munich to Verona and Intercity trains from Frankfurt am Main to Salzburg arrive every two hours and there are occasional night trains to Italy and Austria/Serbia/Hungary. ÖBB corridor trains from Salzburg to Kufstein and back pass to the south of the station since the 1980s on the Rosenheim curve (Rosenheimer Kurve).
Many regional and city buses depart from the station and taxis may be taken from a large taxi stand in front of the station building.
Future
With the state garden show in 2010, the city of Rosenheim wants to carry out a general refurbishment of the station. In addition to replacing the outmoded underpass, raising the height of all the platforms and building in a guide system for the blind, four lifts are being installed from the underpass to the platforms. In addition the platform underpass is being extended enabling it to access the planned Park and Ride facility south of the station. New platform roofing for the centre of the platforms is also planned as is the replacement of the passageways and platform equipment.
Whether the new ÖBB high speed train, the railjet, will stop at Rosenheim, is not yet clear. After the timetable change in December 2008 it is due to connect Munich with Budapest via Vienna every two hours.
