Pulivendula is a town in Kadapa district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The name comes from "Puli Mandala" (meaning Group of Tigers), which was a forest area with high population of tigers, according to ancient sayings, gradually came to be known as Pulivendula. It is located in Pulivendula mandal of Jammalamadugu revenue division.

Geography

Pulivendula is located at 14.4167°N 78.2333°E / 14.4167; 78.2333. It has an average elevation of 272 meters (895 feet).

History

Pulivendula Town is known in the state of Andhra Pradesh because of its political existence. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was one of the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh. His tenure was from 2004 to 2009, and he was elected again as a chief minister in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, 2009. He died three months after his victory in a helicopter crash near Nallamala forest on September 2, 2009. His son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, President of YSR Congress, is the present opposition leader in Andhra Pradesh State Assembly.

Infrastructure

Pulivendula Town has one of the best intrastructure in Rayalaseema region. It includes wide roads, an underground drainage system and a ring road. Pulivendula is connected to Kadapa by a four-lane road, like a national highway. All nearby villages are connected to Pulivendula by double roads.

Governance

Pulivendula municipality is the civic body of the town.The municipality of the town oversees the civic needs like, water supply, sewage, garbage collection etc. Pulivendula comes under Jammalamadugu revenue division.

Pulivendula has recreation places like parks, Silparamam a craft village located in town and number of Temples, Mosque's and Churches etc.

    Uranium mining

    On August 23, 2007, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approval for the establishment of a uranium mine and processing plant at Mabbuchintalapalli-Tummalapalle, about 15 km south of Pulivendula, at a total cost of 11.06 billion rupees ($269.9 million). The plant was set up by the Uranium Corporation of India. Its foundation stone was laid on 20 November 2007 by Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

    Large deposits of natural uranium, promising to be one of the top 20 of the world's reserves, were found in the Tummalapalle belt in the southern part of the Kadapa basin in Andhra Pradesh in March, 2011.

    The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of India, which explores uranium in the country, has so far discovered 44,000 tonnes of natural uranium (U3O8) in just 15 line km of the 160-km-long belt.

    Education

    The primary and secondary school education is imparted by government, aided and private schools, under the School Education Department of the state. The medium of instruction followed by different schools are English, Telugu.

    Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur (JNTU) College of Engineering (CEP) Pulivendula - autonomous was established in 2006. The college foundation was laid on 25 December 2005 by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy , as the fourth constituent college of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University. It is a part of JNTU-Anantapur till 2013. From the academic year 2013-14 the college is autonomous.

    The campus spreads over about 165 acres (0.67 km2) of land and is located in a serene and pollution-free environment, Pulivendula, Kadapa Dt, Andhra Pradesh, India. The campus has six academic blocks, one administrative building, a central library, four hostel blocks, two messes, staff quarters and a guest house.

    Pulivendula Consist of Loyola Degree and Polytechnic College and private colleges and schools.

    Transport

  • Bus transport is available from Pulivendula to Kadapa at 90 minutes interval. Daily bus services are available to Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Ongole, Sri Sailam, Tirumala-Tirupati, Kurnool, Anantapur and Proddatur. Telugu-Velugu bus services are available to nearby villages.
