Gus Reyes Gus Reyes Talks Composing Music for Films Versus Bands

Reyes began his studies in music at the age of 8. His father, Jesus Gustavo Ramírez Avila, student of the great guitar players Manuel López Ramos (México 1929-2006) and Andrés Segovia (Spain, 1893-1987), was his first teacher in music. During his early years Reyes was part of several Sacred Music Choirs, all directed by Phillipe H. Tolón, who was Lead Violín at the Opera Orchestra of Bellas Artes (Mexico) at that time. He became soloist pretty fast, and gave tours for many years. Later, Reyes begin his studies in many important music institutions ending with his application to the "Cardenal Miranda Institute" in 1995, where he spent most of his youth studying music.

Great Mexican teachers had been part of his education, like Xavier Gonzalez Tezcucano (Composer, Orchestral and Choral Conductor), Luis Armando Elias Chain (Composer), Philippe H. Tolon (Lead Violinist), Juan Trigos (Composer), Jorge Torres Sáenz (Composer), Jaime Uribe (Composer and Musical analyst), Eduardo Gamboa (Composer), among others. Reyes studied majors in Composition, Orchestral and Choral Conducting and Musicology.

While studying, Reyes had the chance to start writing music for low budget films, doing almost 20 of them. Most of those films are lost in time, nevertheless he kept writing music for this type of productions almost his entire time in college.

There are now countless examples of Reyes's music in Mexican film industry like "Magnicidio" (2002), "El Ultimo Evangelio" (2008), "El Ultimo País Mágico" (2005), "El Secreto" (2010), "The Dark Side of Light" (2014), "El Entrenador" (2014), "Pink" (2015), "El Charro de Toluquilla" (2016) among many others.

Reyes also has collaborated with other composers like Andres Sanchez-Maher in "Mexican Gangster" (2014), “El Charro de Toluquilla” (Tribeca 2016), "I Dream in Another Language" (Audience Award Winner at the Sundance Film Festival 2017) and with Francisco Albisua in "El Fantástico Mundo de Juan Orol" (2012) as co-composer, music arranger, conductor and orchestrator.

Reyes and Andrés Sanchez-Maher are also best known for their orchestral arrangements for rock bands like "Zoé" in their Latin Grammy award winning MTV unplugged "Música de Fondo" (Mexico 2011) and "Dorian" in their album "Diez Años y un Día" (Spain 2015).

Nominated for the IX Jerry Goldsmith Awards for his work on the film "The Dark Side of Light" at the International Film Music Festival of Cordoba, Spain 2014, and later for the Silver Goddess Manuel Esperón Award for best music for a film at the Pecime Press Awards 2015, Reyes made his international debut with this soundtrack. Edited and distributed by Kronos Records and MovieScore Media, “The Dark Side of Light Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” was very well received by international film music critics and stands as one of the best of 2014. "The Dark Side of Light Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" is still currently available in CD format and Digital download at Kronos Records, MovieScoreMedia, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Music, iTunes, Allmusic, Napster, 7Digital, Kurrentmusic, Intrada Store and many more around the world.
