Territory

The town is located at an altitude of 1722 ft (525 meters) above sea level, bordered by the towns of Chambave, Saint-Denis, Châtillon and Champdepraz and culminates with the top of the reaches Mont Ruvic in 9587 ft (2922 meters)
In the municipal area there are three streams called Molinaz, Eau-Noire (or Éve Née in Valdôtain patois, which means "Black Water") and Vau.

Climate

The location of the village on the right bank of the central valley (to envers) means that it is subject to a microclimate very different countries sites on the left bank.

Indeed, winter mountains in which the country is leaning maintain overshadow the country for 2 months from November 20 to January 30, for this reason the temperatures drop in a much more decisive and touch the 14 °F (−10 °C) during the day, with peaks at night in exceptional years of −22 °F (−30 °C).

During the summer because of its location enjoys greater solar illumination compared to neighboring towns, and because of that the calculation of hours of sunshine throughout the year is substantially equal.

The country is located in climate zone E (2971 Celsius Degrees Day) but under the regional contributions for heating all the municipalities of Aosta Valley are valued as climate zone F.

History

During the Fascist period, Pontey was merged to the municipality of Châtillon, at the time called Castiglione Dora, due to the Italianization programme.
Later, the town was restored in 1946.

Origin of the name

The name probably derives from "ponticulus" name given by Romans during the period of their employment.

Religious Architecture

References to the church are in a papal of 1176 of Pope Alexander III, which is part of the community Diocese of Aosta.

On the territory there are three church buildings: the parish church dedicated to St. Martin of Tours and dated around 1400, the Chapel of the Holy Cross (formerly dedicated to St. Roch, located in the hamlet Banchet) and the chapel of Sorrows (Torin hamlet).

Civil architectures

In Plan-Coca are the remains of industrial archeology "Le Grand Fourneau", a blast furnace a square dating from the eighteenth century, while in places Ussert are the remains of the "foundry" Gervasone .

Archaeological Sites

Worth seeing are the remains of a tomb in the village Proley barbaric, and the remains of mills soapstone who are in town Valmeriana.

Demographics

Pontey had a small population boom at the beginning of the 1980s, with the transfer of many people from neighboring municipalities so that a little less than 500 inhabitants in 1981 has arrived today to more than 800 inhabitants.

Languages and dialects

As in much of the region, also in this municipality is spoken the Valdôtain dialect.

Associations

On the territory operates a POL Amateur that works to promote courses Mountain Bike, excursions and cultural activities, and the Pro Loco.

Economy

The town has a number of accommodation and other local as well as a grocery store.

Since the time of the Romans, on the slopes of Mount Barbeston continued mining of millstones mill obtained from local stone, in rock eclogite ocean (cloritoscisti to garnet and chloritoid), millstones that were exported for centuries even outside the Valle d'Aosta in the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Bologna, for example, it retains a millstone probably from the Aosta Valley found along the via Emilia near Bicester in levels of excavation dating to 'Iron Age. Near Alpe Valmeriana, in the woods and in small caves, numerous fragments of millstones are scattered on the ground and some errant boulders are carved or engraved bear millstones only sketched.

In the municipal area, there are still some quarries in business, and two hydroelectric plants have been installed, comprising two groups of one megawatt.

In the past, local fountains were used to marinate the hemp (in French, for the ruissage du chanvre ), while on the slopes was cultivated the vine a pergola especially the indigenous grape Prié.

5 restaurants / taverns active in the municipality offers a track for Go-Kart.

There are 2 accommodations a hotel-like (1 star) and a type B & B.

The territory is on a non-radioactive hazardous waste landfill operated by the same company that runs the regional landfill L'Île blonde, Brissogne.

Also operates a company that deals with distribution of LPG for heating.

Education

The municipality has access to a primary school dedicated to Jean-André Arbenson and a childhood dedicated to father Laurent-Samuel Henriod.

Social Services

In Pontey a micro-community is available for seniors, dedicated to users of the Unité des communes valdôtaines du Mont Cervin.

Sports Infrastructure

The town has a sports area multipurpose open on 3 May 2010, for the practice of Football 5, volleyball and tennis. In the municipal area is also a climbing wall.

Roads

The road network of the town is made up of the Regional Road 10 (SR10) that allows the crossing of the town from east to west to the junction between the villages of Banchet and Valérod, located at the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Several local roads and facilitate internal communication.

The town is connected with neighboring municipalities through two bridges on the Baltea along the SR10: one connects it with the SS26 (Turin – La Thuile), and the other with the town of Châtillon passing near the railway Station Châtillon .

Along the road that leads to the resort Lézin Crétaz-Boson (along the Baltea) can still see the old bridge no longer passable, even on foot, but still distinctive.

How to reach Pontey

Pontey is accessible via the SS26, taking the junction for the regional road 10, or from the town of Châtillon, going down rue de the races and going straight after the detour to Ussel.

Urban Mobility

The town is also served by a bus service operated by the company SAVDA.

Is not this the railway although it is easy to reach the nearby town of Châtillon.

Administration

It is part of the Mountain Community Monte Cervino.

Sports

In this common to play palet (this is the municipal association), characteristic sports traditional valdostano. At least once a year competitions are held cyclocross and the preliminaries of the batailles de Reines.
