Reason for the name
Piramanoor - Lord Bramha came here to worship the Linga brought by him from the Kailasa Mountain. As per his request, the place is called as Brahmanur (Piramanoor / Piramanur).
Past glories of Piramanur
The pond was brimming with water received from the river Vaigai. Harvest was good. Primary education was good. Children from nearby and far away places like Thattankulam came here to study. Shri Villiappa pillai of Piramanur − one of the court poets of Sivagangai gave his Yettu suvadi (Palm Leaf) of Thiruppuvananatharula to Shri U.V.Saminathaiyer,who compiled the book titled Thiruppuvananatharula. It was printed in chennai,Presidency press in 1904. Shri Villiappa pillai also composed a satire titled Panchalakshna tirumugavilasam (The World Secret Revealer),published in 1899. This narrative piece full of humour and biting irony deals in about 4500 lines with the conditions of the people suffering in the Great famine of 1876−1878 (Thadhu varuda pancham). The relatives of Sivagangai Kings − Shri Thirukanna Rajendra Uthangan, Thirukanna Thevar lived in this village,which is near Thiruppuvanam.
Govindharaja Perumal Temple extinct
According to Thiru Seetha Rama Iyengar(1887-1961), the author of the book Thiruvarutprabandam, Govindharaja Perumal temple was present in Piramanoor during early years of 20th century. But now there is no evidence of the temple.In his book he has written a Pasuram and a Keerthana about the God Govindharaja Perumal.
Effect of droughts and riots
Due to droughts of many years and communal riots, many of the Brahmin, Chettiar and Nadar families migrated in groups to nearby towns − particularly to Madurai. The notable family is of Mr.V.S.Chellaiah @ Chellam nadar (founder of V.S.Chellam soap factory, Madurai − The parent soap company of almost all soap companies in and around Madurai) and his brothers, Mr.V.S.Shanmuga nadar (founder of Laxmi soap,Madurai) and Mr.V.S.Mariappa nadar (co-founder of V.S.Thangam soap, Madurai).
