Pazhani (Tamil: பழனி) is a 2008 Indian Tamil action film with Bharath in the lead role. It is directed by Perarasu and produced by director Shakthi Chidambaram under the banner Cinema paradise. Srikanth Deva scores music. Bharath plays the role of a car driver. Kajal Aggarwal is the heroine and Kushboo plays Bharath's elder sister.
The film was formally launched on 10 June 2007 and was released on 14 January 2008 as a Pongal release. This is the first film release for Kajal Aggarwal in Tamil. It is dubbed into Telugu as Bhargava and in Hindi as Shaktishali Shiva. It is also remade into Oriya as Gud boy. 'Yaarum Ennidam' is a popular love song from this film.
The film opens and ends with jail sequences. In both scenes, Pazhanivel (Bharath), the hero, is seen behind bars. The happenings from his release and his re-entry to the jail make the whole film. Pazhanivel, who comes out of prison, puts his sister Karpagambal’s (Kushboo) life on track through his heroics, and goes back to the prison as a martyr.
Pazhanivel was put behind the bars when he was ten years old. He killed his father's "keep" who made his mother’s life a hell by exploiting her to cajole his ‘keep’. He went to jail and his father turned an aimless vagabond. The boy’s elder sister, who disowned him when he was sent to jail, grew up and got married to a businessman Jeevanandham (Biju Menon). Karpagambal is living in a fool’s paradise, believing the man, who is actually an antisocial element.
However, she need not worry about anything. Pazhanivel, who is now 25, has come out of jail. He gets a job in his sister’s house without revealing his identity, unearths the shady deals of his sister’s husband, reforms him, and puts his sister’s life on track. The satellite rights of the film were secured by Sun TV. The film was given a "U" certificate by the Indian Censor Board. The film faced problems before release as the producer failed to pay the debt.
The movie got moderate review. behindwoods.com gave 2.5/5 saying "Pazhani is not for an audience looking for something offbeat and inventive but for an audience craving for some old formulaic entertainment – loads of action thrown in with mother- sister sentiment" The movie has too many Silent Mass scenes, which kept the audience at the edge of their seats. The film was a commercial success grossing $2 million at the box office.
