Production
The film was based on a semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Jayakanthan in 1971. A. Bhimsingh collaborated with Jayanakthan for the second time after Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal (1976), another film based on Jayakanthan's novel. Jayakanthan wrote the screenplay and dialogues for Oru Nadigai Natakam Parkiral. The actors who were a part of Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal—Sreekanth, Lakshmi, Y. G. Parthasarathy, Nagesh, and Sukumari—were cast in this film too. This was Bhimsingh's last film as he died halfway through the production; his first assistants Thirumalai and Mahalingam completed the film.
Reception
The film was released on 30 June 1978. G. Dhananjayan in his book Pride of Tamil Cinema (2014) appreciated the concept but criticised the film for its failure in execution and the performance of the lead actors. The film was screened at the "Indian Panorama" section of the International Film Festival of India in 1979. Lakshmi won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress the same year. The film has been repeatedly telecasts in the channel J movies and is also available on YouTube. Hence, it is not considered a lost film anymore.
