Biography
Campogrande was born in Turin and graduated in composition from the Milan Conservatory where he studied (with Azio Corghi), and the Paris Conservatory.
He is particularly interested in the new ideas that exist in musical theatre. In his work — from Macchinario to Lego to Cronache animali to Quando piovvero cappelli a Milano to Alianti — the great classical tradition alongside jazz, songs, electronic explorations and memoirs.
His attitude allowed him to exceed the norm of the cultured musical fashions of the 20th and 21st centuries; this granted him a position within the world of international composition. As Michael Antony wrote about Campogrande's 'Urban Gardens' in the Star Tribune in September 2014, "there are touches of Ravel in the writing for piano, but the sound and style is something new and original."
His music is recorded on various monographic discs and is published by Universal, Ricordi, Casa Musicale Sonzogno, and RaiTrade.
He is the artistic director of the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra and editor of the monthly magazine Sistema Musica. He runs the TV program Contrappunti on Classica HD Channel and the radio program Radio3 Suite for RAI; Nicola Campogrande teaches at the Holden School of Narration Techniques and was a professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
