Mullens passed for 1,776 yards as a freshman in 2013 and 2,470 yards as sophomore in 2014. In the 2015 regular season, he had completed 291-of-453 passes for 3,964 yards and 35 touchdowns and ranked sixth among NCAA Division I FBS quarterbacks in passing yardage.

Professional career
After going undrafted during the 2017 NFL Draft, Mullens signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers on May 4, 2017. He was waived on September 2, 2017 and was signed to the practice squad the next day.
