It reverses its direction of travel twice during its run at Amritsar Junction and Pathankot Junction.
Traction
As large section of the route are yet to be fully electrified and due to the routing of the train, a total of 4 locomotives are assigned to haul the train beginning with a Tatanagar based WAM 4 locomotive [6] which hauls the train from Tatanagar Junction up to Barkakana handing over to a Patratu based WDM 3A locomotive until Chunar following which a Ghaziabad or Kanpur based WAP 4 [7] locomotive powers the train until Amritsar Junction finally handing over to a Ludhiana based WDM 2A or WDM 3A [8] which powers the train for the last leg towards Jammu Tawi although it is expected that with the electrification of the Ludhiana - Jammu sector, it may soon be an electric haul up to Jammu Tawi.

2015 derailment
On 25 May 2015, 8 coaches of Rourkela Jammu Tawi Muri Express derailed near Athsari, on Mughalsarai-Kanpur section around 1:40 pm in afternoon. 4 people died and 9 were injured in the accident. Both, Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu & Chief Minister of U.P. Akhilesh Yadav announced compensation to the victims of accident.
