Murgitroyd was founded as a sole practitioner practice in Glasgow, Scotland by Ian Murgitroyd in 1975. The firm became a partnership in 1977 and was incorporated in 1993. It is currently a standalone private limited company owned by a holding company, Murgitroyd Group PLC, which has been traded on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange since 2001. Ian Murgitroyd is the Chairman of Murgitroyd and his son, Edward Murgitroyd, is CEO.
Murgitroyd is the sponsor of the Murgitroyd Twenty20 cricket event.

Murgitroyd has 12 offices in Europe—in the UK, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland—and direct representation rights in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Furthermore, the firm also has two client liaison offices in the United States and a further office in Nicaragua specialising in patent searching, after an acquisition in June, 2016.
