Score by competitions

Montenegro have participated in four qualification rounds for big tournaments so far. On every occasion, Montenegro failed to qualify, and biggest success was placement to playoffs for UEFA Euro 2012.
At their beginnings, Montenegro tried to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but they finished fifth in their group. Montenegro had more success in UEFA Euro 2012 qualifications, when they finished 2nd in their group, and qualified for the play-offs. They failed to qualify for the main event, because they lost their two leg match against Czech Republic.
At qualifiers for 2014 FIFA World Cup, Montenegro won the third place in the group, and two years after, in the qualifying group for UEFA Euro 2016 finished fourth.

FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifiers

On their first qualifiers in the team's history, Montenegro finished at fifth place, with same number of points as a fourth-placed Cyprus. Montenegro finished qualifiers with one win, six draws and three defeats. Except leading Italy, the only team which defeated Montenegro was Bulgaria in Sofia. First win in qualifiers, Montenegro made against Georgia.

UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers

With their performance, Montenegro became the biggest surprise in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers. Staying undefeated against England, with crucial wins against Switzerland and Bulgaria, Montenegro finished as a second team in the Group G. That means placement to the playoffs, where Montenegro played two games against Czech Republic. But, at their final stage on the run to Euro 2012, Montenegro was defeated - 0:2, 0:1.

Czech Republic won 3–0 on aggregate and qualified for UEFA Euro 2012.

FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers

With good results from the previous qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2012, Montenegro started successfully in qualifying for 2014 FIFA World Cup. Most important win, Montenegrin team made in Kiev against Ukraine (1:0). But, at finish of qualifiers, Montenegro was defeated against Ukraine in Podgorica and against England away, so they finished as a third team in the Group H.

UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers

In UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers, Montenegro didn't succeed to make good result, mostly because the crowd violence on the match against Russia in Podgorica. That was a crucial game for the third place in the group, but after violent scenes at the Podgorica City Stadium, UEFA decided to register match as a Russia win (3:0). In the moment of interruption, result was 0:0.
