Early years

James attended Ridge Community High School in Davenport, Florida, where he played high school football. He was ranked as the 18th-best running back prospect by Scout.com and was ranked as the 21st best running back prospect by Rivals.com. He was ranked as the 33rd best running back by ESPN.com. He was selected to The Ledger's all-county first-team as a running back. He was an FSWA All-State honorable mention in high school. He was selected to the Mobile Press-Register's Super Southeast 120.
College career
James played college football at the University of Miami. During his college football career, he played 40 games and rushed for 1,340 yards on 304 carries with 17 touchdowns. In the 2010 and 2011 seasons, he played mainly as a backup for Damien Berry and Lamar Miller. In the 2012 season, he and Duke Johnson shared playing time.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

On April 27, 2013, James was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round (189th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft. He signed his contract on May 13, 2013 and also got a $103,152 signing bonus and his four-year deal is worth $2,263,152. He was waived by the Buccaneers on September 29, 2015.

On December 26, 2015, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers promoted James to the 53-man roster.
On September 7, 2016, James was waived by the Buccaneers after an injury. He was released from injured reserve the following week by the team.
Detroit Lions
On October 3, 2016, James was signed to the Lions' practice squad. He was released by the Lions on October 25, 2016.
