Maurizio Landini was born in Castelnovo ne' Monti, near Reggio Emilia in 1961. He started working when he was 15 years old as an apprentice welder in a cooperative in the engineering sector in Reggio Emilia. It was an official of the Federation of Metal Workers Employees (FIOM) of Reggio Emilia and then its General Secretary. Subsequently, he was elected general secretary of FIOM of Emilia-Romagna and one in Bologna.

On 30 March 2005 Landini was elected to the national secretariat of the FIOM, the metalworkers' union of the Italian General Confederation of Labour.

As national secretary was in charge of the household appliances sector and that of two-wheeled vehicles. He led negotiations with companies such as Electrolux, Indesit and Piaggio. To these posts was added that of head of the union that led him to follow closely with the then General Secretary, Gianni Rinaldini, negotiations for the renewal of the metalworkers' contract in 2009. Always with the position of head of the union, Landini was the head of the delegation FIOM in negotiations for the renewal of the contracts of national enterprises adhere to Unionmeccanica-Confapi and that of small businesses.

Published by Simon and Schuster in 2011 - with Giancarlo Feliziani - "Change the factory to change the world - the FIAT, the union, the left absent," is a book-length interview which traces the whole story FIAT, the relationship with Sergio Marchionne, and other unions and the world of politics.
