Joseph Adam Ereli (born 1960) was an American diplomat and ambassador. Ereli was the ambassador of the United States to the Kingdom of Bahrain from 2007 to 2011. He subsequently was the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Education and Cultural Affairs from 2011-2014. He is currently the Vice Chairman of Mercury, a public strategy consulting firm in Washington, DC.

Career

In 1989, Ereli joined the Foreign Service and served in Africa. He also served as the Director of the Office of Press and Public Affairs. Ereli was sworn in as the 15th United States Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain on June 28, 2007. He arrived in Bahrain on June 30.

Life

Mr. Ereli earned a B.A. in History from Yale University in 1982 and an M.A. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University in 1989. Before entering the Foreign Service, he worked as a journalist and human rights activist in Paris, France.
