High Sierra Music Festival is a multi-day music festival held in Quincy, California, a mountainous area about 80 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada.

Contents

The festival is held each year the weekend of July 4. The four-day festival features an eclectic mix of some of the most famous national and international names in jamband, newgrass and funk. Other represented genres include bluegrass, roots rock, electronica, reggae, jazz and afrobeat. Away from the music stages, patrons can attend films and movement playshops - yoga, pilates, etc., shop for arts and crafts, or enjoy a wide variety of gourmet food and drink. It's a family friendly and community oriented event with an expanding Family Area full of activities and certified nannies available throughout the weekend.

The first High Sierra Music Festival was in 1991, and was the genesis of High Sierra Music, of Berkeley, California. The organization has also produced festivals and concerts elsewhere in California, and in Maryland, Nevada, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Missouri.

Past artists have included The Black Crowes, Bob Weir & RatDog, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Bruce Hornsby, The String Cheese Incident, Nickel Creek, moe., Widespread Panic, Medeski Martin & Wood, Yonder Mountain String Band, Gov't Mule, John Butler Trio, Umphrey's McGee, My Morning Jacket, Les Claypool, Leftover Salmon, and The Slip (the only band to play the festival 12 consecutive years).

In late 2007, the festival left a message on its website:

Initial line-up announcements for the 18th annual High Sierra Music Festival, taking place July 3–6, 2008, will begin this winter. Please stay tuned here and to our eNewsletter for updates!

In December 2007, two acts were confirmed on websites other than the festival's; the Sparrow Quartet feat. Bela Fleck on Pollstar, and Railroad Earth on JamBase. In January 2008, twelve artists, including the two previously announced, were revealed on the festival's website. On Valentine's Day, the festival headliner was announced, Bob Weir & RatDog, as well as other artists such as James Hunter, New Monsoon, and the Mother Hips. The next group of additions was announced about two weeks later, and included Michael Franti & Spearhead as well as Phish alum Mike Gordon. The next block of additions included headliners Gov't Mule and Built to Spill, and the next April addition included Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll, and Sipe, and festival first Buckethead.
