Eve /iːv/ is an English given name for a female, derived from the Latin name Eva, in turn originating with the Hebrew חַוָּה (Chavah/Havah – chavah, to breathe, and chayah, to live, or to give life). The traditional meaning of Eve is "living".
The name has religious significance in the Abrahamic religions, as the first woman was named Eve. Its use as a first name in England began in the 12th century. It did not, however, gain much popularity until the Protestant Reformation. Beforehand, it was usually associated with Jews, who either use the form or Chavah. In west Africa the name Eve means AWA
