Eel Cow, an Ojibwe chieftain, claimed this area and surrounding land as his family’s hunting and fishing territory in the early 1800. The lake still bears his name and is one of the larger lakes in the region. The popular Cottage Country destination lake has some very interesting shoreline and underwater structure.

The many islands and bays found around the lake make for ideal bass habitat, as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and Rock bass frequent these areas. Smallmouth are much more common than largemouth and provide for good fishing at times. A natural population of lake trout also exists in Eels Lake. The lake also holds good populations of walleye, as well as yellow perch, which are quite prevalent, but largely ignored.

In order to help preserve the natural lake trout population of Eels Lake, slot size and winter ice fishing restrictions are in place. Please check the provincial fishing regulations for details.

In addition to a few different launching sites, visitors to Eels Lake will find that there are a number of resorts and rental cottages available on the lake. Last minute supplies and local fishing tips can be picked up in the Eels Lake Marina.
