Original studio - 584 8th Ave, New York

Dubway was founded in the 1981 by Al Houghton in the historic Music Building in Midtown. The building was known to house a collective of musicians and artists, and at the time had two recording studios, one of which was Dubway Studios.

"The building has changed. Initially it was a community. People used to jam a lot and everyone was friendly. Then as time went on it got a little more desperate. The city got more expensive and people had to work harder and didn't fool around as much." - Al Houghton It was here that Al Houghton recorded They Might Be Giants eponymous debut album, and Lincoln, their second album.

Second location - Chelsea

After 16 years Houghton and his made the decision to move Dubway Studios to Chelsea, where Mike Crehore joined him as a partner. The studio remained here for 14 years until relocating once more. During this time dubway expanded into television production including the Nick Jr. Backyardigans and Bubble Guppies award-winning animated children’s series.

Third location - 42 Broadway, New York, New York

Dubway Studios current residence is in Manhattan’s Financial District, 42 Broadway NYC, NY. The building was built in 1902 and was designed by Henry Ives Cobb. Dubway Studios is Located on the 22nd floor of the historic building.

The main floor of the complex is centered around three control rooms, accompanied by two VO/instrument overdub booths, and a larger triangular grand piano room. Dubway shares the penthouse Mezzanine studio with Engine Room Audio. Engine Room originally constructed the 1100 sq. ft. recording space and operates its own busy studios adjacent to Dubway. The Mezzanine features 20 ft. ceilings, large iso booths, and an SSL 4064 G+ console.

Dubway’s clients have included: HBO, Discovery Channel, Nick Jr., PBS, Showtime, McDonalds, iTunes, IFC, NFL Films, Twentieth Century Fox, Antony & the Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, Patti Smith, They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, Cyndi Lauper, Dar Williams, Alicia Keys, Joseph Arthur, Dan Bern, Richard Barone, and Cat Power.
