Donald D. Avenson (September 16, 1944 – May 19, 2017) was an American politician in the state of Iowa.

Avenson was born on September 16, 1944 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He lived in Oelwein, Iowa and went to the Oelwein Public Schools. Avenson attended the University of Wisconsin and the University of Northern Iowa. Avenson worked at the Oelwein Tool & Dye Company. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1973 to 1991, as a Democrat. He unsuccessfully ran for Governor in 1990, losing to Terry Branstad. Avenson died in Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska on May 19, 2017 from a heart attack. He was 72.
