Football

Butler is a Charlotte, North Carolina athletic power in many sports, most notably in football with 3 North Carolina State Championships (2009, 2010, 2012) and 9 SW4A Conference football championships (2002, 2007, 2009–2013, 2015, 2016). Butler has quickly risen to national prominence, with the football team often highly ranked in major national polls. The Bulldogs have gone undefeated in conference 6 times and have defeated their arch-rival the Independence Patriots 11 times in the past 8 seasons, including 4-0 in the playoffs. In 2009, Butler won its first 4AA State Championship title at Carter-Finley Stadium defeating Fayetteville based Jack Britt High School 48–17. In 2010, behind a dominant offensive line and potent defense, Butler repeated as North Carolina State 4AA Champions by defeating Wake Forest-Rolesville High School 44–0 and finished the season with a 31-game winning streak. In 2012, Butler defeated Fayetteville based Jack Britt High School 56-28 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, winning the NC 4AA state title for the 3rd time in 4 seasons. In what is widely considered to be one of the most dominant seasons in North Carolina state history, undefeated Butler finished the 2012 season ranked # 1 in North Carolina and # 3 in the final USA Today 2012 National Super 25 Football Poll. In what is widely considered to be the best recruiting class in North Carolina high school sports history, the Bulldogs sent 13 players to Division 1 schools. The group, littered with recruits in the top 50 nationally, included, QB Christian Lemay, LB Kris Frost, RB Jahwan Edwards, RB Deion Walker, OL Kendall Lamm, OL Sean Knight, OL D.J Humphries and WR Zach Ferguson.

Wrestling

Butler's wrestling team is also successful. The team finished 4th in the NCHSAA 4-A dual team tournament during the 2007–2008 season. During the 2008–2009 season, Butler went to the 4-A dual team state finals. Butler beat Northwest Guilford in the quarter finals and then went on to wrestle Concord Robinson. Butler won the last two matches to tie, then advance over Concord Robinson. Butler went on to wrestle against Cary High School (36–0) in the finals, falling to Cary by a score of 43–13. They finished the season with a 21–4 record. Butler was not only an un-ranked team that season, they were also the first Charlotte team to make it that far since 1998.

Girls' basketball

Butler's girls' basketball team won the state championship in 2009-10, and went 30-0 the following season before a premature loss to Mallard Creek in the Class 4A Western Regional semifinals cut their chance at a repeat short. Butler has finished in the top three spots of the conference standings nearly every year of its existence. (Andrew Stark, 11/19/14 Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly)
