Growing up in Palm Beach, Sydney, Scotts first played rugby union for The Scots College and was a member of the 1981 Australian Schoolboys Rugby team. He later moved to Hawaii,on a full football scholarship after being spotted by an assistant coach during a rugby game. After being drafted in the third round of the 1987 NFL Draft, he forged a brief career in the NFL where he played as a defensive end and tight end in seven games in 1987 for the St. Louis Cardinals and was traded to the Houston Oilers but did not play for them.

Colin attributes his success to his early coaches Brett Hinch and Michael Markidis and his 1/2 brother Sam tapp.
