Betts was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Northern Michigan University.

Amateur wrestling career

Betts was a Minnesota high school state champion. He defeated Jordan Holm 2 to 0 in the final of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 84 kg category. He progressed to the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he defeated Keitani Graham from the Federated States of Micronesia in the qualification round. He was eliminated from the competition in the next round by Pablo Shorey of Cuba, losing 3–0.

In November 2013, Betts signed a contract with the professional wrestling promotion WWE. He was assigned to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida and adopted the ring name Chad Gable (a nod to Olympian Dan Gable). He made his in-ring debut at a WWE NXT house show in Cocoa Beach, Florida on September 5, 2014, defeating Troy McClain. He made his television debut on the January 8, 2015 episode of NXT, losing to Tyler Breeze.

In May, Gable began a storyline with Jason Jordan, in which he attempted to convince Jordan to form a new partnership following the dissolution of Jordan's team with Tye Dillinger. After nearly two months, Jordan finally agreed to a tag match with Gable as his teammate. On the July 15 episode of NXT, Gable and Jordan were successful in their official debut together, defeating the team of Elias Samson and Steve Cutler. On September 2, Gable and Jordan competed in the first round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament, defeating the team of Neville and Solomon Crowe. After defeating The Hype Bros, they were eliminated from the tournament by Rhyno and Baron Corbin in the semi-finals at NXT TakeOver: Respect. Gable and Jordan defeated two teams of former NXT Tag Team Champions, The Ascension and The Vaudevillains on the November 18 and December 2 episodes of NXT, respectively. On the January 27 episode of NXT, Gable and Jordan adopted the name American Alpha and defeated Blake and Murphy. At NXT TakeOver: Dallas, American Alpha defeated The Revival to win the NXT Tag Team Championship, but lost the titles back to The Revival at NXT TakeOver: The End, leading to speculation that the team would be called up to the main roster.

In the 2016 WWE draft, Gable was drafted along with Jordan to SmackDown. On the August 2 episode of SmackDown, Jordan and Gable made their debuts, defeating The Vaudevillains. On the SummerSlam pre-show, American Alpha teamed with The Hype Bros and The Usos (Jimmy and Jey) to defeat The Vaudevillains, The Ascension and Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango) in a 12-man tag team match.

American Alpha then entered an 8 tag team tournament to determine the inaugural holders of the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship, defeating Breezango in the first round to advance to the semi-finals where they faced The Usos. Despite defeating The Usos quickly on the September 6 episode of SmackDown, Gable's knee was kayfabe injured during a post-match assault when The Usos attacked them, rendering American Alpha unable to compete at Backlash.

On the November 1 episode of SmackDown, American Alpha defeated The Spirit Squad to join Team SmackDown in the 10–on–10 traditional Survivor Series tag team elimination match. At Survivor Series, Team SmackDown were defeated by Team Raw. They defeated The Wyatt Family to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship in a four corners elimination match also featuring The Usos and Heath Slater and Rhyno on the December 27, 2016, edition of SmackDown. They had a successful title defense at Elimination Chamber in a tag team turmoil match. After losing the Smackdown Tag Team Championships to the Usos, they made their WrestleMania debut on the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

Teaming with Shelton Benjamin (2017–present)

On the June 20 of SmackDown, Gable faced Kevin Owens for the United States Championship, after an open challenge by the champion for Dayton, Ohio residents was accepted by AJ Styles, in a losing effort. Before the match, Gable claimed he had moved to Dayton the morning before the show. After the disbandment of American Alpha with the reveal that Jason Jordan is the illegitimate son of Raw General Manager Kurt Angle, Gable would later move on to singles competition. On the August 1 episode of SmackDown, he was defeated by Rusev.

On the August 22 episode of SmackDown, General Manager Daniel Bryan announced that he had signed a returning Shelton Benjamin to team up with Gable, therefore creating a tag-team between the two. The following week on SmackDown, Gable and Benjamin picked up a win over The Ascension in their first match as a team.
