Carnikava (livonian: Sarnikau, german: Koivemund) is a village in Carnikava municipality, Latvia. Carnikava had 4,015 residents as of 2015. Located 25 km north from Riga at the mouth of the longest river in Latvia named Gauja. First mentioned in Livonian chronicles in 1211 as a summoning place of Livonian troops. Further existed as a fishermen village, where in 17th century the first breeding fishery and canned fish factory in the Empire of Russia were built. Due to its proximity to the Baltic Sea, several forest lakes, Gauja River, and annual fishermen and craftsmanship fairs, nowadays Carnikava is a popular summer resort among Riga inhabitants.
