The Canadian Comedy Awards (CCA) is an annual ceremony that celebrates achievements in Canadian comedy in Live Performances, Radio, Film, Television and Internet media. The awards were founded and produced by Tim Progosh in 2000. The inaugural show was broadcast on The Comedy Network.

Contents

Until 2002, CCA was held in Toronto, and from 2003 to 2007 they were held in London, Ontario in conjunction with an annual comedy festival known as Comedy Week. In 2008, they moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, then in 2009 to Saint John, New Brunswick. From 2010 to 2012 they returned to Toronto, and in 2013 and 2014 moved to Ottawa, Ontario. In 2015 CCA moved back to Toronto.

Past hosts include the Royal Canadian Air Farce, Scott Thompson (of The Kids in the Hall), Dave Thomas, Brent Butt, David Foley and Bruce Hunter (as Rocko the Dog, the character he played on Puppets Who Kill ).

The 2000 and 2001 awards were produced and aired on The Comedy Network by Higher Ground Productions. The 2001 CCA special received a Gemini nomination for writing. Annual CCA variety specials were broadcast on television from 2007-2010. The Doo Wops received a Gemini nomination for their performance in the 2008 special and the 2009 special, co-produced by Higher Ground Productions and Mind's Eye.

The CCA are currently produced by The Canadian Comedy Foundation for Excellence .

2000–2006

  • 2000 - The first Canadian Comedy Awards were held in Toronto, Ontario at the Masonic Temple and were hosted by Dave Thomas. The awards were televised as a special, winning a 2001 Canadian Comedy Award for Best Direction - TV Special or Episode for its director, Bob Sorger.
  • 2001 - The 2nd annual awards were held in Toronto, Ontario and were hosted by Patrick McKenna (of The Red Green Show and Traders) and Sheila McCarthy. The awards were televised by The Comedy Network.
  • 2002 - The 3rd annual awards were hosted by Brent Butt. It was the last time the awards were held in Toronto before they were moved to London, Ontario in 2003.
  • 2003 - The 4th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards were held at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, and hosted by Royal Canadian Air Farce. This was the first time the awards were held outside of Toronto since the show's inception in 2000, and they remained in London through 2007.
  • 2004 - The 5th annual Canadian Comedy Awards were held in London, Ontario at the London Convention Centre. They were hosted by Scott Thompson of The Kids in the Hall fame.
  • 2005 - The 6th annual awards were again held in London, Ontario, and hosted by Puppets Who Kill character Rocko the Dog (voiced by Bruce Hunter).
  • 2006 - The 7th annual awards were announced October 26 at the London Music Hall in London, Ontario. They were hosted by Will Sasso, with Royal Canadian Air Farce, Dave Broadfoot and Mike MacDonald. The awards were part of a broader Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival which took place from October 25–28, 2006.

    • 2007

    The 8th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards were held at the London Music Hall in London, Ontario on October 12, 2007 as part of the Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival which ran from October 10–13, 2007. It marked the 5th straight year that the awards ceremony was held in London.

    2008

    The 9th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards & Festival were held from October 1–5, 2008 at Casino Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan. 2008 was the first year the awards were held outside of Ontario. Previous Canadian Comedy Awards ceremonies took place in Toronto (2000–2002) before moving to London, Ontario (2003–2007). Nominations were announced at an industry luncheon at The Second City in Toronto on June 3, 2008 and the awards presentation ceremony took place on the evening of Friday, October 3, 2008 at Casino Regina, hosted by Alan Park with presenters including Dave Foley and Mike Wilmot.     Nominations for the 2009 Canadian Comedy Awards closed April 30, 2009. They have announced that the awards will be held in Saint John, New Brunswick this year, from October 1–4. This is the first time the awards have been held in Eastern Canada. Nominations were announced on the CCA website on the morning of Monday, July 6, in videos hosted by Nikki Payne and Pat Thornton.

    The winners were announced at a ceremony hosted by Sean Cullen, at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John, New Brunswick. Winners appear below in uppercase.
