Big Dance Theater is a New York City-based dance theater company known for its experimental theater works, combining dance, drama, and literature.

History

Big Dance Theater was founded in 1991 by husband and wife team and co-Artistic Directors Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar. The Big Dance Theater company has created more than fifteen productions, some with international influences.

Performance

The company has performed at many venues, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, Classic Stage Company, Japan Society, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Chocolate Factory, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Walker Art Center, Yerba Buena, On the Boards, New York Live Arts, UCLA Live, and The Spoleto Festival USA.

Internationally, the group has performed at many festivals and theaters in Europe and Brazil.

Awards

Big Dance Theater has received New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Awards in 2002 and 2010; the company was presented with an Obie Award in 2000 and BDT company members have received five other Bessie Awards and an OBIE award for their work with Big Dance. In 2007 the company received the Creativity Award from Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
