Bhupesh Baghel (born 23 August 1961) is an Indian politician, from Chhattisgarh. He is a member of Indian National Congress and the current President of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee since October, 2014. He is an elected member of Chhattisgarh Assembly. His assembly constituency is Patan (District Durg).

Background

Bhupesh Baghel was born on born on 23 August 1961 in a farmer family as the son of Shri Nand Kumar Baghel and Smt. Bindeshwari Baghel. He is married to Mukteshwari Baghel, who is daughter of renowned Hindi writer Dr. Narendra Dev Verma and niece of spiritual leader Swami Atmanand.

He is a proud father of three daughters and a son.
Political Career

Bhupesh Baghel started his political career under the guidance of his political guru Late Chandulal Chandrakar in early 80s. He joined Indian Youth Congress (IYC) in 1985 and was President, IYC Durg District (rural) from 1990 to 1994. He was Vice President of Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress (1994–95).

He was elected to Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly consecutively in 1993 and 1998 from Patan. After the state of Chhattisgarh was created he became member of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly in 2003 and in 2013 from the same assembly constituency. He was Indian National Congress candidate for Parliamentary elections in 2004 from Durg Lok Sabha seat and 2009 from Raipur.

Baghel was appointed minister of state in Digvijay Singh’s cabinet (Public Grievance Dept. attached to the CM) in December, 1998 and promoted as Minister of Transport in December, 1999. He was appointed Chairman of MP State Road Transport Corporation in January, 2000.
When the state of Chhattisgarh was created by the Government of India in November 2000, Baghel became First Minister for Revenue, Public Health Engineering and relief work (until 2003).
He was Deputy Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly from 2003 to 2008. He is leading the state unit of Indian National Congress since October, 2014.
Social Commitments
He is patron of Chhattisgarh Manva Kurmi Chhatriya Samaj since 1993.
He has been advocating social reforms in the society. To avoid lavish marriage functions and to promote marriages with minimum expenditure he has been organising mass marriage ceremonies.
Recently, the Kurmi Samaj had taken oath to quit drinking, ban liquor consumption in any social gathering and for complete prohibition. The Chief Minister of Bihar Shri Nitish Kumar was the chief guest of the function in which the oath was taken.
