Aaron J. Gilbert or "AJ" (born 1979) is a Cuban-American artist best known for his psychological and symbolic explorations of human interactions and relationships in paintings and prints. He is based in Brooklyn, New York.

Biography

Gilbert was born in 1979 and raised in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He attended Pennsylvania State University and in 2000 received an Associate of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Gilbert returned to school at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and in 2005 received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. In 2008, he received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in Painting.

He was married to photographer Deana Lawson and together they have a son named Judah. Lawson has said to have been influenced by Gilbert's artwork, and much of Gilbert's early artwork depicts of the family including Lawson and their child.

His work, "The New One" (2007) is in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Museum.

In 2010, Gilbert was awarded the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award for Painting.
