The 6th Filmfare Awards were held in May 10, 1959 at Bombay, honoring the best films in Hindi Cinema for the year 1958. Madhumati became the biggest winner when it received Best Film of 1958 and Best Director, both for Bimal Roy.

Dev Anand won his first Best Actor trophy for Kala Pani. Vyjayanthimala won her second Filmfare and first Best Actress trophy for Sadhna, the same year she was also nominated for Madhumati. Madhumati has the highest nomination with eleven nominations and was a record winner where the film has won nine awards altogether. Madhumati was followed by B. R. Chopra's Sadhna (1958 film)| with six nomination and two wins, incidentally both had Vyjayanthimala in the lead.
